31 September/October 2019 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN Craig Holcomb, vice president, operations support services, has been elected to serve on the board of trustees for United Way of Portage County. Holcomb will serve a three-year term and is a member of the Campaign Committee. Davey is a pacesetter contributor and one of the largest contributors in the community. "It is an honor to represent our company and be elected to the United Way board," Holcomb said. "As a life-long resident of this area, I am excited to volunteer and give back to the community." Congratulations, Craig! Sandra Reid, vice president, corporate communications and strategic planning administration, has been elected to serve a three-year term on the board of directors of the Portage Development Board (PDB). PDB aids industrial realtors, builders, local industries and local communities to help maintain and improve the economic base in Portage County, Ohio. Reid serves on the executive committee and is chair of the marketing committee. "I enjoy representing Davey, a long-time, major employer based in Portage County," Reid said. "PDB helps create and retain jobs by coordinating economic development opportunities." Congratulations, Sandra! IN THE SPOTLIGHT Rich Rathjens, right, urban forester and senior agronomist, with The Davey Institute, received a commemorative plaque from the Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA) thanking him for his contributions to the ANSI A-300 Tree, Shrub, and Other Woody Plant Management Standards Committee. Rathjens was one of Davey's representatives on this committee. After 17 years of service, Rathjens decided to step down. Tim Bushnell, skills trainer, and chair of the ANSI A-300 Work Practices Standards Committee honored Rathjens with the plaque. Congratulations, Rich! Dan Herms, vice president of research and development, Davey Institute, received the International Society of Arboriculture's (ISA) Award of Distinction, the L.C. Chadwick Award for Arboricultural Research. This award recognizes individuals whose research has contributed valuable information to arboriculture. Herms received the award at the 2019 ISA Annual International Conference and Trade Show held in Knoxville, Tennessee. Herms has been a member of the ISA since 1983 and receiving this award was very special to him. "I'm extremely proud to receive this recognition for a career's worth of research and to know that it's valued by the industry and my peers," Herms said. "When you look at the list of past recipients, it's humbling to be added to that list." Congratulations on this achievement, Dan! Jack McCabe, vice president and general manager, utility vegetation management, Davey Resource Group (DRG), was elected as vice chairman of the board of directors of the American Red Cross of Portage, Summit and Medina Counties. The vice chairman serves on the executive committee and provides support to the chairman of the board and executive director. McCabe will serve in this role until 2020 and is currently in his second three-year term on the board. "I enjoy serving on the board of directors. It's an honor to support an organization within our community that helps people on the worst day of their lives," McCabe said. "Whether it be because of a home fire, a natural disaster or an injury or illness requiring life giving blood, the American Red Cross fulfills a Congressional mandate to help people in critical ways." Congratulations, Jack! Thea Sears, vice president and controller, has been elected as secretary of the Governing Authority for Bio-Med Science Academy STEM School in Rootstown, Ohio. Bio-Med Science Academy is a year-round public STEM+M (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics + Medicine) school for grades 4 through 12. "Bio-Med has expanded rapidly in the past few years from its beginnings as a high school and it's been exciting to be part of that growth. I am looking forward to what the future holds for the school and our students," Sears said. Congratulations, Thea!
