29 September/October 2019 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN KITS SOOTHE CANCER PATIENTS Patricia Hoover, regional fleet coordinator, helps her dear friend Tammy Ledene honor the life of her daughter Connor, who passed away from cancer, by making "cancer care kits" for children and teens battling the disease. "Tammy's a huge influence in all the people in her life," Hoover said. "I can't even put it into words how great she is and how easy it is for me to do this every opportunity I can." Hoover, Ledene and other friends assemble the kits around the holidays and deliver them to local children's hospitals. Around Easter they made a special trip to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital to deliver kits. The main goal is always to give these children and their parents hope, Hoover said. "Helping her means everything to me. I would like to see more people share in this and take time to help others," Hoover said. "I'm more than willing to give my time to these kids. I hate that they are going to potentially leave this Earth before me." Patricia Hoover set up a box at work to collect items for the kits. Some of the items in the kits include books, coloring books, socks, stuffed animals, hand sanitizer, candy, lotion, tissues, pens, markers, blankets and toothbrushes. The kits also include personalized notes to the children, parents and the nurses. OHIO LEGISLATORS VISIT DAVEY Representatives from the Ohio legislature visited Davey's corporate office in August to learn about the partnership between Davey, Kent City Schools and the Six District Educational Compact. This partnership supports the forestry and landscape management program at neighboring Theodore Roosevelt High School. Davey President and CEO Pat Covey, Greg Ina, executive vice president, Davey Institute and employee development, and Chris Bast, vice president and treasurer, were among the Davey leaders who met with Ohio legislators. The state representatives included Randi Clites, Susan Manchester, Joe Miller, Bill Roemer, Allison Russo and Casey Weinstein. Executive leaders at Davey hosted Ohio legislators at the Davey Institute in August. OWNER'S BOX " You take pride in the way you conduct business. You come into it with a sense of ownership that you are buying into something, so you have a little more commitment and you have a little more pride in what you're doing every day. Personally, I should have started sooner. You may not think about looking into your future when you're in your twenties, but definitely start sooner. " LISA SHAFFER client experience coordinator Charlotte office
