27 September/October 2019 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN DAVEY VOLUNTEERS FOR HOME FIRE SAFETY A dozen members of the Davey Resource Group team from the Kent office mobilized to help the American Red Cross educate Ohio homeowners about fire safety. The group helped install 27 fire alarms and canvassed over 100 homes in Ravenna, Ohio, as part of the national Sound the Alarm Campaign. Like the American Red Cross, Davey is often there during disasters, and both organizations understand the need to be prepared for things to go wrong. Smoke alarms may not prevent a home disaster; however, they do save lives because people typically have only 2 minutes to evacuate. Jack McCabe, vice president and general manager, utility vegetation management, DRG, who serves on the board of the local American Red Cross chapter, was grateful for the A dozen volunteers from DRG's Kent office volunteered to install smoke alarms and educate the public on fire safety. PRUNING LOW FOR THE KIDS The learning garden fruit trees of Western Avenue School in Geneva, Illinois, are well-tended and well-loved. For the past five years, Steve Matravers, assistant district manager, West Chicago office, makes an annual volunteer visit for a fruit production prune, ensuring the branches weep low for the young students while still producing fruit. "When the branches are short, the students can really see what's going on when they bloom and produce. It's a better learning environment," Matravers said. BUSINESS DEVELOPERS MEET Regional business developers gathered at the Davey Institute in August to discuss sales practices, operational best practices, collaborative team selling and more during the two-day meeting. Attendees of the session, facilitated by Frank Monteleone, national sales manager, included: Tom Beeching, Commercial Landscape Services (CLS); Brian Borkowicz, National Business Development Team; Kyle Celmer, Residential/ Commercial (R/C); Cynthia Grady-Henke, CLS and R/C; Bonnie Marshall, CLS; and David Pattishall, CLS.
