THE DAVEY BULLETIN
Scott Martin, utility vegetation management (UVM) technician, Davey
Resource Group, stopped a grass fire from becoming a major disaster.
While patrolling a utility line in the vicinity
of Carthage, Texas, Martin noticed
some smoke on a neighboring property.
A woman approached the utility right
of way and told him she needed help.
Martin drove around to the driveway
of her house and saw that there was
a major grass fire.
"It was a pretty big fire," he said. "I
grabbed my fire extinguisher and ran
over to the fire. I immediately realized
that the fire was too big to control."
He called 911 and did what he could
until the fire department arrived.
"If they had arrived about 15 minutes
later, it would have been a whole lot
worse than it was," Martin said. "It
was dry, with wind, and that's just a bad combination." Martin said in situations
like this one, it pays to be prepared and to remember fire safety.
"We really touch on fire safety. You never know what you're going to run into,
so you always have to be prepared," he said. "I'm glad I was able to help."

"
Obviously, you see
the financial returns
immediately. But
employee ownership
makes you want to
be a team player or
a team leader. It's
the team. The people
at your operation
who are purchasing
company stock are a
tight-knit group who
plan to be around a
long time and plan to
make the most of it.

IT PAYS TO BE PREPARED
Scott Martin did what he could to stop the
spread of the fire until the fire department
arrived. Once the fire department arrived,
they were able to put out the fire before it
became worse.
