Above: When the Honda CRV hit a chipper
truck from another tree care company,
Monica Wirick said it looked like confetti
falling because the wood chips exploded out
of the back. Wirick's grateful that she was
further back than the assured safe distance.
When the chipper truck skidded out of control,
it headed right for her, and she could have
been part of the accident.

CRASH RESCUE
Monica Wirick, crew leader,
Commercial Landscape Services,
Cleveland East territory, witnessed
an accident involving a Honda CRV,
driven by a father and his two young
children, and a chipper truck from
another tree care company.
The CRV turned directly into the
chipper truck, Wirick recalled. When
the two vehicles collided, the chipper
truck flipped onto its side before
skidding into a drainage ditch and
coming to a stop upside down.
The CRV ended up going through
a cable barrier.
The driver of the chipper truck was
able to get out of the truck quickly
after the accident. Wirick jumped
out and helped the family in the
CRV get out of the car, which was
smoking.
She feared the car would
catch on fire.
The son and daughter were fine,
with some scratches. Their father was
too, although he was a little banged
up, Wirick said. As she put it, they
were incredibly fortunate.

She stayed with the children and kept
them calm while their father was
assessed by the paramedics. She
treated the daughter's superficial
scratches to help her feel better.
"The dad kept thanking me," Wirick
said. "I'm just glad they all were OK."
