31 January/February 2019 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN I am frequently asked by field employees: What is the most important thing we can do to make our company successful? My answer is always the same: Be Safe. Safety defines everything we do at Davey. It forms the bedrock of our values as a company and informs all our decisions. It matters for every crew. It matters in every office and every home. It matters every day. How we think about safety is critical and has evolved over time. A few years ago, we started using the term "Davey Personal Excellence," or DPE, to talk about how we teach and live safety here at Davey. What is DPE? Essentially, it is an organizational strategy that addresses safety and business effectiveness. It's not a tactic. It's not a singular event that is unsustainable. It is not about any specific service we perform, or a situational circumstance. It's a way of thinking that helps us to commit to safety as a core value, or standard which we always abide by. We know that DPE, when used correctly, can help reduce errors. It can proactively identify and correct the factors that contribute to our injuries, damages and incidents. In short, it helps us do the right thing, even when no one is watching. We've adopted DPE because keeping ourselves and our fellow employees safe is the most important thing we do. Because we know this is a crucial topic, we will be working to keep this DPE top-of-mind for all our employees. The next issue of the Bulletin will include a story on the annual DPE meeting here in Kent, but more importantly, it'll be an opportunity to start talking about how the program is shifting behaviors and actions within our company. We are asking for your assistance to continue to elevate our discussion around DPE. Specifically, The Bulletin staff will be looking for examples of crews using DPE in the field.
