12 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | January/February 2019 ADDING TO ABILENE'S COMMUNITY CANOPY The canopy of Abilene, Texas, grew by 20 trees thanks to a partnership between Davey and client American Electric Power Texas. Each fall the city hosts an Arbor Day tree planting and giveaway for residents. Nelson Medina, supervisor, AEP account, said AEP is a partner and asked Davey to take part. "We've been working with AEP for many years but have been specifically working in Abilene just over a year," Medina said. "We thought it was a good opportunity to give something back to the community." The 20 trees donated by Davey were 10-gallon sized and consisted of mostly live oaks and cedar trees When a local memorial tree honoring a fallen soldier from the community needed replaced, Davey's Rochester R/C office stepped up to help. The tree was planted years ago at the town hall of Greece, New York, to honor a local veteran who died while serving in Afghanistan. Recently, a family member noticed it was declining. The town of Greece is a Davey client, so they called Davey to assess the tree. When Dave Stoessel, sales arborist for the Rochester R/C office, took a look at the tree it became apparent that it needed to be removed and replaced. "My contact at the town asked for a cost to replace the tree, but my thought was that it would be a great goodwill gesture to the family, the veterans' community and the town of Greece in general to donate a replacement tree," Stoessel said. The Rochester R/C office donated and planted a new sugar maple tree at the town hall to replace the original memorial tree. The tree will be monitored and receive deep root fertilization treatments to enhance the tree's sustainability. HONORING A FALLEN SOLDIER Davey's Rochester R/C office donated this sugar maple to replace the original memorial tree planted in honor of a local fallen soldier. VISION obtained from the Culpepper Creek Farms nursery in Abilene. A total 50 trees were given away at the event to local families for planting in their yards. Residents and new trees gathered at a community planting event in Abilene, Texas.
