17 November/December 2018 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN ARBORGUARD CHARLOTTE Michael Burton, Barry Gemberling, Preston Perreault, Alex Raab, Alfredo Urbina Cruz Thank you for your quick response and partnership during Hurricane Florence. Northwood office team Ballantyne Corporate Park Charlotte, North Carolina GREENSBORO OFFICE A 100-year-old oak with a circumference of 6 feet fell on my house at 12:30 a.m. during Hurricane Florence. I called Davey at 8 a.m. By 8:30 a.m. their arborist was here making assessments, and by 9:30 a.m. the whole crew was here with a bucket truck, crane, chipper, other equipment and tons of expertise. By 5:30 p.m., the tree was off the house and all the debris removed from the yard. Every worker was polite, worked non-stop and seemed to have lots of knowledge and talent. I can't say enough nice things about my experience with Davey Tree. Thank you! Jenny Bissell Greensboro, North Carolina WOLF TREE Thank you for making available 22 forestry personnel to South River EMC to assist with power restoration efforts after Hurricane Florence. These individuals were amazing and truly a blessing to us. We had 31,000 without power after Florence's landfall on Friday, Sept. 14, and with their help we were down to less than 200 by Tuesday evening. Our members are grateful as well, and I know the restoration efforts would have gone on much longer without them. I commend all of you for your hard work in difficult conditions. Please extend my appreciation to everyone for their service and dedication. Chris M. Spears Executive Vice President/CEO South River EMC The Charlotte R/C office removed limbs on this tree damaged by the hurricane. It was one of several storm response calls for the office in the wake of Hurricane Florence. LETTERS FROM THE STORM "Depending on what part of the state you were at, a lot of the water stayed around for two days after the rain quit," he said. "It was handled really well in a safe, timely manner, and everybody worked well and did everything as they needed to do it and were smart about it." Further inland, in western areas of both Carolinas, flooding didn't prove as severe. Josh Pressley, supervisor, Duke Energy account, said they benefitted from the higher elevation of the mountains. "We didn't have anything like the eastern part of the state had," Pressley said. "We still had some heavy rains, but it wasn't as dramatic as the East Coast was. It makes you thankful for where we live, in the mountain area. We tend to hardly ever see any kind of floods like that." For most Davey Utility crews, the response lasted about a week. But for some employees, the storm's effects are long-lasting. Gray and several of his crew members sustained personal storm damage, but that didn't slow their emergency response. "That's something you put on the back burner," Gray said. "You've got to take care of everybody else before you can worry about yourself."
