COLORADO TREES ARE FOCUS OF PHC CLASS Eighteen Davey employees from Colorado met in Denver for a Plant Health Care workshop conducted by Gil Mitchell and Len Burkhart, technical advisors, Davey Institute. Attendees learned about trees growing in the front range of Colorado along with what insects, diseases and abiotic factors affect them. One of the topics discussed was identifying and managing emerald ash borer, as Boulder is the western-most infested city in the U.S. One of the unique aspects about the front range is that it only receives about 15 inches of rain per year, Burkhart said. The low rainfall means systemic insecticides may not distribute completely within a tree, which could lead to insecticide failure. "This is especially problematic for trees that are attacked and killed by borers," Burkhart said. "To combat this problem and improve borer management in Colorado, two products applied to a tree offers a solution." Attendees also received an introduction to fall and winter watering for trees and shrubs and discussed how pesticide applicators can protect pollinators. IMPROVEMENT On a cool May morning, Dan Defelice was traveling to the office when he noticed a fire with billowing smoke on the side of the highway. Defelice, a UVM specialist, San Diego Gas & Electric account, Davey Resource Group, speedily dialed 911, only to hear a blaring busy signal. Knowing he had a backpack-style fire pump, Defelice sprang into action and put his fire training to use. He knew the fire was still small enough that he could work to put it out safely. Defelice hoped he could stop it from spreading. Instead, he put the fire out from a safe distance within a few minutes.
