10 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | November/December 2018 The West Columbus R/C office sponsored the Delaware Lacrosse Club in Delaware, Ohio, for the 2018-19 season. The office's donation helped support a summer camp for students in kindergarten through fourth grade to develop their skills in the sport of lacrosse. "Through our contribution each participant received a camp T-shirt, four days of instruction and a free lacrosse stick," said Kristopher Bruestle, district manager. ENCOURAGING TEAM WORK AMONG LOCAL CHILDREN The Davey logo is present on the back of each T-shirt and on a banner at the home games. Davey also will be featured in programs and recognized as a major contributor throughout the year. WEATHER IMPACTS ON RIGHTS-OF-WAY Anand Persad, manager, arboriculture and plant sciences, Davey Institute, conducted a safety leadership day in Jamestown, New York, with over 280 attendees, which included foresters from National Grid and seven tree care companies and employees from Davey's Utility services operations. The main themes of the day were natural tree dismantling and tree hazards in the utility right of way. Natural tree dismantling is not often discussed and is a relatively new area of research in tree biomechanics, Persad said. It has to do with the impacts of weather, such as storms, snow, ice, wind and drought on Anand Persad speaks during the training. An outdoor laboratory featured five ash trees rigged to perform winch tests or pull tests. Scenarios were done to show what can happen when a hazard tree is overloaded. Attendees were polled to see where they thought the tree would break, depending on the scenario, and looked at other trees to learn how to visually inspect for potential defects. trees and how these elements can cause trees to fail. "For example, when we get a lot of heavy, wet snow spruce trees may fail most regularly in February and March in the Northeast. When a snow storm's coming through, you know you might lose trees," Persad said. "The question arises as to what trees may be more affected and where are they located? Can we manage our pruning practices to help reduce natural loading effects? Our research continues." For utility companies, identifying the trees' species and knowing how weather impacts them can help our clients predict possible failures that might impact their right of ways. LEADERSHIP ZIPPING THROUGH THE TREES AT KIDS' FEST For eight years, The Care of Trees, a Davey company, Barrington office, has been a staple at the Barrington Park District's Kids Fest. The office hosts the "Come Climb a Tree" activity, which allows kids to climb an oak tree and zip line to the ground, said John Kelly, sales arborist. "Thanks to our teammates' efforts, our activity is the most popular John Kelly wanted to thank Ernesto Patino, Moises Guerrero, Adrian Zambrano, Jorge Guerrero, Ricardo Perez, Mike Johnson and Del Garcia for their help with the event. He also wanted to thank Angie Sodamade, Folake Sodamade, Tara Klein and members of their families for volunteering. attraction for the kids to participate in," Kelly said. "We take great pride in being there."
