CARING FOR TREES
IN THE NAME OF HONOR
Jones Bros. Tree and Landscape, a Davey company, was
given the opportunity to give back to a special group.
The Alpha Omega Veterans Services group in Memphis,
Tennessee, needed major tree work throughout their
property, so Jones Bros. joined with several local tree
companies to do the work free of charge.
Alpha Omega Veterans Services is a non-profit charitable
organization headquartered in Memphis that assists military
veterans to reintegrate into society.
When Nathan Baker, district manager of Jones Bros.,
asked about the scope of work he immediately signed
up for the biggest portion of the job – a large tree removal.
The tree was about 40 inches in diameter and required a
crane for removal.
"We ended up having seven different employees on the
project by the time it was all said and done," Baker said.
"Using a four-person removal crew, one came in to grind
the stump, two with a truck to haul away all the debris from
the day, and then I was on site all day from start to finish."
He said it was about a nine-hour day of donated work for
himself and his employees, but it was all worth it.
When Baker heard the veterans' service group was in
need, he didn't think twice.
"I think homeless veterans are a population that is often
forgotten in our country," he said. "A lot of these people
served in Vietnam and really deserve our respect. I just
thought, if we could do just a little bit to help them out
and show our appreciation, then it's all worth it."
Though this was a one-time, robust project, Baker said
he would be happy to help care for their trees again in
the future.
