ARBORGUARD PREPARES FOR THE PGA CHAMPIONSHIP
A major golf tournament calls for major grounds preparation.
Quail Hollow Club, a longtime client of Arborguard Tree
Specialists, hosted the 2017 PGA Championship. An event
like this is momentous for all involved, as it's one of the
four most prestigious golf tournaments world-wide in
professional golf.
Arborguard's Charlotte office was heavily involved in the
preparation of Quail Hollow for the PGA Championship.
In the months leading up to the tournament, tree care
throughout the course involved soil therapy, pest
management, pruning, cabling and storm cleanup.
In addition to the client work performed to prepare for the
tournament, Arborguard sponsored the volunteer grounds
crew for the week of the PGA Championship. A tournament
like this requires an expansive staff, so about 200 golf
course superintendents from throughout the country were
brought in to maintain the golf course for the duration of
the PGA. The sponsorship of the grounds crew went toward
food, lodging and clothing to be worn throughout the
week. Arborguard's logo could be spotted on the sleeves
of all volunteer shirts throughout the televised PGA
Championship week.
This may have been Arborguard's first time prepping for
the PGA Championship tournament, but this isn't the first
professional golf tournament they've manicured the grounds
of Quail Hollow for. The club has hosted a PGA tournament
annually for the past 13 years, and they have been a client
of Arborguard for the past 12.
After many years of providing maintenance to a professional
level golf course, Barry Gemberling, district manager
of the Arborguard Charlotte office, and the rest of his
team have become well-seasoned in the likes of
tournament preparation.
"It has been a rewarding 12-year relationship with
Quail Hollow Club that has spanned three different
superintendents," Gemberling said. "Myself and one
of our sales arborists, Terry Wisner, spent several years
working the night shift with superintendents raking bunkers
during tournament weeks, and this networking has led to
substantial additional golf course work for our office."
