3 May/June 2018 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN " I believe Davey culture is showing up to work every day with an optimistic mindset and making sure you are doing your best to assist your clients and your peers. Whether sitting in the office answering phones and emails or out and about making those face-to-face contacts, you want to put forth your best effort in a safe and effective way to make your client's experience the best it can possibly be. When you put that positive work effort out there you get positive responses in return – the ones you want to hear. " LEA BERMUDEZ client experience coordinator East Bay office TELL US A STORY Matt Fredmonsky If you work at Davey, and you're reading this column, then it's likely you might believe that trees have a voice. Biologist and author David Haskell is making the case that trees do, in fact, have a voice. And that voice changes depending on the species. Published in 2017, Haskell's latest book, The Songs of Trees, includes an explanation of how he believes trees can talk. It's quite an imaginative exercise to wonder what kind of a story a tree would tell. LEGACY TREES In Oregon this spring, residents of North Clackamas gathered at Happy Valley Park to take part in a tree planting. This event offered a celebratory yet mournful component. Honoring loved ones, family members planted memorial trees to celebrate a lost family member or friend as part of the "Gift Tree" program, the Clackamas Review reported. The fledgling trees would take root and give new life to the memory of the beloved. "This tree will go on living, and another generation can come here and say this tree is for grandma," Portland resident Jill Konig told the Clackamas Review about a tree planted for her mother. Have you ever planted a memorial tree, or have you helped a client plant or care for a memorial tree? Tell us about it. Email your story to bulletin@davey.com for consideration in The Bulletin. WHAT DID YOU DO FOR ARBOR DAY? In the next Bulletin, the July/August issue, we'll highlight some of the amazing ways Davey teams gave back to their community for Arbor Day in 2018. So, if your team did something great for the community on Arbor Day, tell us about it! Email your story ideas to bulletin@davey.com, and we'll choose a select few stories to feature in The Bulletin. LIFELONG LEARNERS Speaking of Davey stories, in this issue there are a lot of stories about training. Numerous Davey employees received specialized training on a variety of topics, including Plant Health Care, hazard trees and general arborist skills. Community members in Massachusetts learned basic tree care methods and arboriculture skills. Arborguard employees learned more about TreeKeeper, Davey's tree inventory software. Utility services employees learned how to become better leaders. The theme here is continuing education – something Davey employees pride themselves on. We are lifelong learners who strive for constant improvement. Kudos to every Davey employee who's working to expand their knowledge base!
