3 March/April 2018 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN " Since attending the Davey Institute of Grounds Management, everything's moving fast. I just came back from another workshop, a Plant Health Care class that A.D. Ali and Shawn Fitzgerald taught. I learned so much in both about Davey history, plants, books, fungi, everything. By taking classes like these, they taught me that I could move up. It made me feel important – like I can do something with myself. It was a totally different experience. I know so much more with the knowledge I've been given at Davey. " FELIPE SMALL landscape crew leader, Tampa Maintenance, Commercial Landscape Services, Tampa, Florida CALLING ALL YOUTH ARTISTS! Matt Fredmonsky The Bulletin is putting out a call for submissions from young artists for an illustration contest. We want to see your best drawings depicting what Davey means to you. Maybe it's your mom working way up high in a bucket truck. Maybe it's your dad wearing all his PPE. When you think of Davey, maybe you imagine a big, green Davey truck. However you envision the Davey Company, put your imagination to work by putting what Davey means to you down on paper. The Bulletin team will choose the best illustrations and feature them here in a 2018 issue. One special entry might make the cover. To submit an illustration entry, you have a few options. You can scan the drawing and email it to bulletin@davey.com. Or, you can mail an original copy to The Bulletin address listed on page 2. If you have questions, call 800-447-1667, ext. 8615. The contest is open to children of all ages who are related to a Davey employee. Submissions are due June 1. Select entrants will receive a copy of the book "I Can Name 50 Trees Today!" WOMEN IN ARBORICULTURE The Bulletin is proud to feature two stories in this issue showcasing women who work in arboriculture. In Texas, Davey employees attended a Davey-sponsored women's climbing workshop, which was designed to ap- proach tree climbing from a woman's perspective. In the West, employees attended the Western Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture's women's tree climbing workshop. Similar to the Texas program, the workshop was created by women, for women. It's difficult to determine how many women work in arboriculture. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics splits the broader industry into several different job classifications, including one defined as "tree trimmers and pruners," a category that does not track by gender. Data is limited, but one 2002 study showed women comprised about 10 percent of arboriculture jobs in the U.S. Despite a lack of available, recent data, it's clear women are an important part of the green industry. Davey employees like those attending women's climbing workshops are showing us this every day by working to break through the glass canopy. 50 YEARS AT DAVEY This issue we give a special congratu- lations to John Strevel, who celebrates 50 years in the green industry. John works in the shop at Wolf Tree, Inc., a Davey company. At a recent meeting (pictured on page 30), John was recognized for his half-century of service. Congratulations, John!
