5 March/April 2018 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN ASK THE PRESIDENT Q. What is the value of providing training to Davey employees? A. Just about every year for the past 100 years, employees from around North America have come to our headquarters in Kent, Ohio, to attend an intense, month-long training program known as the Davey Institute of Tree Sciences. When they finish their classes a month later, the students talk about the friendships formed, the knowledge gained and the connections made. In short, they leave energized and engaged. But it's important to remember that D.I.T.S. is just one of many training programs offered by Davey throughout the year, in different locations, on a vast array of subjects. Each year, thousands of Davey employees dedicate many hours to both giving and receiving training. The reason we spend this much time and money on training is because it is absolutely critical to the success of our company as a whole. The training we do is not just for technical knowledge, but also safety knowledge. Technical and safety training go hand in hand, and we've never had a period where it's more important to focus on those topics. Training is also important to our retention efforts because we have a changing workforce. Fewer and fewer people are pursuing green industry careers, so once we make a good hire, it's more important than ever to retain them. To do that, we need to keep training them for their next step and show them a path. It is a constant and continual process that helps differentiate us as a company. If we do this right, as a workforce, we are energized and engaged, just like those 48 students who graduated from D.I.T.S. this year. Interested in taking some additional training this year? I appreciate you making it happen and sending the top-notch team to remove the trees off Holmes Point for us. I added three dead small fir trees that could have snapped and two alders to the workload. They managed to get all the trees identified north of Champagne Drive. They kept the waterway clear and left nursing logs in the open space as agreed. Thank you very much! Bobbi Wallace City of Kirkland, Washington NEW JERSEY TERRITORY Folks continue to pass on to me both orally and by email compliments about the beauty and efficiency of University Convocation. A typical compliment was this: "Wonderful job, beautiful venue and impressive organization… a first class event." On behalf of the new president, the new university provost and me, great job and many, many thanks! Peter J. Woolley, Ph.D. Fairleigh Dickinson University FIRSTENERGY ACCOUNT Anthony Lash I have had nothing but hassles over the years, but your employee who actually did the work on the property is the only one who has ever come to the door, told me what they were going to do and actually did what they said. Cleaning up and everything. This employee was so respectful. He worked so hard. Daryl Lyle Holidaysburg, Pennsylvania
