35 January/February 2018 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN A TRIBUTE: LUDWIG'S LIFE BUILT AROUND DAVEY 1. Do what you love! "My interest at Davey was caring for trees and helping people. Looking back on my career at Davey, I have many, many memories. I worked for hours to save the large oak tree that was estimated to be 350 years old on Robert Rutherford "Colonel" McCormick's estate. I really enjoyed all the challenges of the job! I also liked running all the equipment – the stump grinding machine, bucket truck, mist blower, chainsaws, chippers and tractors." 2. Stay focused to stay safe. "The most important thing is to keep your mind on what you're doing. Never be too hasty to figure out how to do things safely. I remember one time I spent hours cutting off one half of a tree that was along the power lines. That was before we had small enough chainsaws to use off the ground. Instead, I had to use a handsaw, called a bull saw. It took a long time for me to cut the limb off and flush the cut, but I did it!" 3. Work hard, do it right and be proud of your accomplishments. "At Davey, I learned resting or taking a break doesn't mean you have to stop working. You just do something different for a while, and that equals taking a break. Then, do things the right way." This retiree corner is a tribute to Paul Ludwig, who recently passed away on December 13, 2017. Ludwig was able to read this story before it went to print and thoroughly enjoyed it. RETIREE CORNER Bruce Jalbert retired Dec. 31, 2017, following 26 years of service. He was a sales representative in the East Denver office. Robert Jurgens retired Dec. 31, 2017, following 42 years of service. Jurgens was district manager of Jones Bros. Tree & Landscape, a Davey company. Jurgens joined Davey in 2016 as part of the Jones Bros. acquisition. He started with Jones Bros. in 1975 upon graduating from the University of Florida's forestry program. Jurgens eventually rose to become owner and president of Jones Bros., founded in 1938. Gary Kiniry retired Nov. 30, 2017, following 5 years of service. Kiniry was a mechanic in the Stamford office. Jereme Ocker retired Jan. 1, 2018, following 33 years of service. Ocker was a sales representative in the King of Prussia office. He started with Davey in 1984. Ocker later served as a spray technician and district manager of the West Philadelphia R/C office. RETIREMENTS Jeff Stevens, retiree, passed away Dec. 30, 2017. Stevens retired in September 2017 following 37 years of service. He was fleet operations manager in the corporate office. Stevens started with Davey in 1980 at the Kent Shop in the parts department. Marguerite S. Wertenberger, retiree, passed away Dec. 19, 2017. Wertenberger retired in January 1989 after 40 years of service. She started with Davey in 1949 in the central filing department before training for the position of chief switchboard operator/receptionist at the corporate office, where she worked until her retirement, earning the nickname "the voice of Davey." IN MEMORIAM In 1950, when he was 17 years old, Paul Ludwig left his family in Mitchell, South Dakota, to strike out on his own. Ludwig heard Davey was hiring in the Chicago area, so off to Chicago he went! He started at Davey in September 1950 as a groundman. Later, he became a trainee climber and then a foreman in line clearing, spraying and tree surgery. In 1954, Ludwig graduated from the Davey Institute of Tree Sciences, which LUDWIG'S LESSONS FOR WORKING AT DAVEY Paul Ludwig proudly worked at Davey for the entirety of his 36-year career! Paul Ludwig's family threw him a Davey- themed 80th birthday party. was the first D.I.T.S. class held at the Davey Technical Service Center (now called Bryce Road). Ludwig worked for Davey in the Chicago area for his entire life until he retired in 1986. After that, then, his love for Davey continued to run deep! His family threw him a Davey-themed 80th birthday party, and he made the trek to Kent, Ohio, to attend the 2017 Davey Shareholders' Meeting.
