3 January/February 2018 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN " You can keep moving and growing at Davey. In part, that's because there is always a way to keep learning – from the Davey Institute of Tree Sciences to career development programs that help you get your GED ® or master's degree. It's a lot more than climbing at Davey. With the right attitude and enthusiasm, climbers become vice presidents. It's inspiring to see people move up in the company like that, and it motivates me to do better. " TONY BRANDT foreman Residential/Commercial services North Denver, Colorado THE PAST REFLECTS ON THE FUTURE Matt Fredmonsky Reflection can be a useful practice. Knowing where you've been can help you determine the best path forward. In this issue, we'll read numerous examples of how Davey's past is connected to its future. We recognize Davey's two newest John Davey Award of Excellence recipients. They are in the twilight of their Davey careers, and both men substantially contributed to Davey Tree's past successes. We also meet five ascending leaders within the Davey Company who will help shape the future of Davey Tree. In "Preserving a Piece of Family History," the lost art of grafting shows us how trees planted generations ago can sidestep the saw and grow anew. "By Force of Habit" offers a sneak preview of a slick, new safety feature that puts the power of safety in your hands. And we memorialize several long-time Davey retirees, including "the voice of Davey." We also learn how Davey uses the latest digital technology to make historic arboriculture materials available to anyone via davey.com. And we find out how a barn dating to the 1800s was carefully disassembled and preserved for possible reuse. ASK THE PRESIDENT This year, The Bulletin introduces a new feature. Davey President and CEO Pat Covey will answer questions commonly asked by field personnel in "Ask the President," which debuts on page 6 of this issue. If you have a question you'd like to submit, send an email with "Ask the President" in the subject line to bulletin@davey.com. Include your name, title and office/account location. The best questions and answers will be considered for Bulletin publication. CONTINUING EDUCATION This time of year, some employees may be looking forward and examining ways to advance their careers before frigid winter weather gives way to the busy season. Read about ways to obtain Continuing Education Units (CEUs) to maintain your International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist ® accreditation on page 33. Davey offers other career advancement opportunities, including an educational degree partnership with Kent State University (with online course options) and more.
