HIKING HALFWAY AROUND THE GLOBE
The rumblings of an active volcano couldn't keep Jake
Simon from witnessing the sun rise over the island
nation of Indonesia.
Simon, project coordinator, Davey Resource Group, and
his wife, Sarah, trekked to the top of Mount Batur while on
vacation in 2017. The volcano last erupted in 2000, yet it's still
billed as a popular tourist destination – particularly for the
early morning views.
Hikers start their journey at 4 a.m. and can reach the
summit, a little more than 1 mile above sea level, in
about two hours – just in time to see the sunrise.

"Seeing the sunrise from the top was definitely an awe-
inspiring experience," Simon said. "We also ate hard-boiled
eggs cooked by our guide in the steam vents, and got to
interact with native monkeys on the hike down. The whole
thing was amazing."
