39 November/December 2017 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN ALLYENE WOLF'S 30 YEARS AT DAVEY AND 100 YEARS IN OHIO 1. Do what needs to be done."Do the best you can do, and never say that's not my job! Do whatever there is to do, and learn how to do your job well. That's my best piece of advice. In fact, it wasn't until I retired in 1983 that I knew my title was an administrative assistant. I always thought I was a secretary! I enjoyed what I did, and I learned how to do it as best I could. It also helps to learn about the company – the history, the background of key personnel and what it takes to excel in current and future positions." 2. Mean what you say, and say what you mean. "One of my most memorable stories from my 31-year career at Davey involved O.B. Crosser, a long-time Davey executive. I often handed him reports about clients, and once, I called it by the wrong name. He looked at me and said when you talk to me, 'Mean what you say, and say what you mean.' It was a good lesson and one of the best things I remember! I also love our motto, 'Do it right or not at all.'" 3. Remember why you're doing it, and keep going. "I thought I was going to retire at 65, but to get my 30 years of work in, I worked another year and a half. That meant I'd retire in 1982. But, they told me that if I just worked into the New Year, my benefits would be greater. Again, I worked a few more months before retiring in early 1983. It was all worth it! Since then, my stock has kept growing, and I keep holding onto it. There's no reason to sell it if it keeps increasing in value!" RETIREE CORNER Evelyn Marie Boyd retired Sept. 17, 2017, following 2 years of service. Boyd was a client experience coordinator in the Needham office. Wayne E. Burbank retired Sept. 3, 2017, following 1 year of service. Burbank was a utility vegetation management technician on the Seattle Utility account. Jose Del-Real retired Oct. 1, 2017, after 38 years of service. Del-Real was a foreman on the PG&E Mission account. Jim Glazebrook retired Oct. 1, 2017, after 42 years of service. Glazebrook was a sales arborist in the North East Chicago office. Froylan Padilla retired Aug. 13, 2017, after 2 years of service. Padilla was a climber on the PG&E Los Padres account. James Pochedly retired Oct. 1, 2017, after 39 years of service. Pochedly was assistant district manager in the East Cleveland office. Paul Rudie retired Oct. 15, 2017, after 5 years of service. Rudie was a foreman in the S&S wood waste recycling facility. Paul Wilkinson retired Oct. 29, 2017, after 40 years of service. Wilkinson was a general foreman on the PG&E Diablo account. RETIREMENTS Kathie Grimm, retiree, passed away Oct. 15, 2017. Grimm retired in August 2016 following 21 years of service. She was a supervisor in the customer service department in the corporate office. IN MEMORIAM From 1951 to 1983, Allyene Wolf was a staple in the Davey Company. Wolf first joined the billing department, but before long she served as an administrative assistant to many of the company's executives. She helped whoever needed help the most – traveling from Davey's stenographic pool to the Davey Institute. Off the clock, she raised four children, taught Sunday school and was an original member of Kent's Toastmistress club, now known as Toastmasters. In her retirement, she's enjoyed traveling, studying genealogy and all of the help her son Lee provides! Looking back at her 30-plus years at Davey, here are the memories and lessons Wolf wants to share. WOLF'S TOP THREE PIECES OF ADVICE FOR WORK Recently, Allyene Wolf was met with a standing ovation from the 102 attendees at her 100th birthday party in Kent, Ohio! What's her secret to a long, fulfilling life? Well, she's a big reader with over 1,000 books. One of her books "How to Live to be 100," suggests eating a bedtime snack of graham crackers – a tradition she's long practiced!
