" There are few companies out there that offer the opportunities and upward mobility Davey does. Many of our leaders and vice presidents started out in the field or the back of a trim truck. Upper management consists of people who did their job well and moved up. That's available to anyone who wants it. If you want to succeed, put in the hours and do what's needed. You can and will move up at Davey. " THE DAVEY BULLETIN IS FOR EMPLOYEES LIKE... VINCE DISTROLA assistant district manager Residential/Commercial services West Denver, Colorado ISSUE ROOT OF THE GIVING BACK IS A YEAR-ROUND EFFORT Matt Fredmonsky Arbor Day, for arborists, is like the Super Bowl and Christmas had a baby. Although each state has its own, national Arbor Day in the U.S. and Arbor Week in Canada is a special time of the year when the public listens to us preach about the wondrous benefits of trees – and why it's important to plant and care for them. In this issue of The Bulletin, Davey offices from across North America check in with their stories of how they spread the gospel of John Davey and shared a love of trees with their communities by planting or caring for trees at schools, museums, retirement villages, nature centers and more. But Arbor Day isn't the only day when you'll find Davey employees giving back. There are a variety of ways your local office or account can give back to the community yearlong. Take a freshly washed Davey truck to a local touch-a-truck event for children to explore. Make a tree float for a holiday parade. Participate in a Halloween trunk-or-treat. Use your aerial lift to help in an area school's egg-drop challenge. Get creative. If nothing else, read all the stories in this issue about what other Davey offices have done, and see if you can borrow an idea for nurturing your community. COVER CONTEST WINNER The cover of this issue's Bulletin comes from Travis Mitchell, estimating arborist, Davey Resource Group. Travis is the winner of the Bulletin Cover Photo Contest, which we announced in our March/April issue. Travis' photo of Moraine Lake in Alberta, Canada, is absolutely stunning. We received more than 50 photo submissions from a few dozen Davey employees. The Bulletin team narrowed it down, and then we asked followers of the official Davey social media accounts to vote for the winner. Our corporate photographer, Melinda Yoho, shared these thoughts on Travis' shot: "Great use of lines zigging and zagging down the frame. The repetition of the tall, foreground trees is nice, too. The color and value contrasts are great, and the fog adds a lovely touch!" Congrats Travis! See page 6 for honorable mentions. September/October 2017 | The Davey Bulletin 3
