It's backā¦
Gypsy Moth caterpillars are experiencing resurgence, again
causing significant defoliation in portions of Massachusetts.
They feed on almost every deciduous plant in their path, but tend
to prefer oaks. The mature caterpillars are easy to recognize by
five pairs of blue dots and six pairs of red dots conspicuously
located across their backs with long fine hairs covering their
entire body.
Recent drought conditions have proven unfavorable for the
proliferation of a fungus (Entomophaga maimaiga), which has
been credited with suppressing the Gypsy Moth populations
throughout the area. Timing of treatments in spring and early
summer is critical with these insects because targeting later larval
stages can be less effective.

Moth treatment.
