It's backā€¦ Gypsy Moth caterpillars are experiencing resurgence, again causing significant defoliation in portions of Massachusetts. They feed on almost every deciduous plant in their path, but tend to prefer oaks. The mature caterpillars are easy to recognize by five pairs of blue dots and six pairs of red dots conspicuously located across their backs with long fine hairs covering their entire body. Recent drought conditions have proven unfavorable for the proliferation of a fungus (Entomophaga maimaiga), which has been credited with suppressing the Gypsy Moth populations throughout the area. Timing of treatments in spring and early summer is critical with these insects because targeting later larval stages can be less effective.
