34 The Davey Bulletin | November/December 2016 An employee of the Davey Nursery selects a tree to be dug and shipped for a customer. ARCHIVES FROM THE A GROWING LEGACY AT THE DAVEY NURSERY In 1964, the Davey Nursery was just one of many "new twigs appearing on the Davey Tree" as then-president of the Davey Company Alexander M. Smith explained to employees in The Bulletin. The concept of a company nursery started to germinate in 1962. The company chose a farm in Wooster, Ohio, where Davey planted about 1,000 trees in 1964 to start the operation on about 160 total acres. The Davey Nursery eventually expanded to more than 300 acres, and in 1984 and 1985 plantings from the nursery were used in developing the landscaping for Davey's new corporate headquarters in Kent. Today, 52 years after its founding, the Davey Nursery has an inventory of more than 90,000 with nearly 100 distinct varieties of shade and ornamental trees. An aerial shot of the Davey Nursery in the 1980s shows the grand scope of the operation. Workers at the Davey Nursery prepare freshly dug trees for delivery in the 1970s.
