DESIGN 101: KEEP IT SIMPLE >> Ask your Davey Representative about a free, no-obligation design consultation. PLANNING The key to an aesthetically pleasing, long lasting landscape is fast- forwarding your design plan two, three or even ten years into the future and adjusting accordingly. " Put the right thing in the right place," says Davey Branch Manager Vito Monteleone. "Look at the growth habitat of the plant as well as surrounding conditions. If we know a tree is going to reach 50 feet tall and 20 feet wide, let's not plant next to a structure. Or let's say you want a certain type of tree for appearance. If it's not tolerant to salt or it's not disease resistant, we'll recommend changing it so that the green space looks nice yet lasts longer than a season." PARTNERSHIP Make sure your architect, designer, arborist and other landscape professionals work together—before, during and after your project. " A well-done project is one that's thoughtfully planned, looks good, has structure and works for the long term," says Monteleone. "Your designer can give you a 'wow' look but your maintenance people will have the best idea of what will actually work in and around the site." FORM & FUNCTION When done correctly and strategically, great design will enhance your property and solve potential problems. " Great commercial landscape design is more than buildings hidden behind squared yew hedges and burning bushes clipped in the shape of meatballs. Plants not only enhance a property, they can actually help visitors find their way," says Davey consulting designer Anne Coke. "Repeatable plant groupings and vibrant colored annuals, for example, offer an immediate visual cue to keep visitors on course." GREAT LANDSCAPE DESIGN IS A LOT LIKE A GREAT RESTAURANT: IT LOOKS INVITING, FEELS EFFORTLESS, AND DELIVERS A GREAT EXPERIENCE. A FINISHED LANDSCAPE NEEDS A STRONG START.
