RETIREE CORNER HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR DAVEY DAYS "Life is fun – if you make it that way! Jobs are like that, too," said Sheila Grellner, who served 21 years as an office coordinator for Davey's St. Louis, Missouri, R/C office. "You've got to get along with the people there, and make the most of it!" Grellner worked at Davey from 1991 until her retirement in 2013. She spent her days helping clients, filing paperwork, handling timesheets and managing bookkeeping. Grellner recognizes she "was lucky to work at Davey – and so are you!" She knew Davey was a wonderful company to work for while she was there. Three years after her retirement, Grellner still spends her days talking about how kind and helpful the company is. "Everybody at Davey is there to help," she said. When she's out and about, if she hears someone talking about a lawn problem or wondering if a tree would work well in the yard, she chimes right in. "Call Davey Tree!" Grellner is quick to say. "They'll tell you what to do. They always give good advice – I ought to know. I worked there." Getting to connect with "all the great people and sweethearts" who worked at or did business with Davey was one of Grellner's favorite parts of her job. As an office coordinator, she got to spend much of her day on the phone, speaking directly with those great people. She did her best to talk with them, but more importantly to listen and really understand them. "I knew everyone's voice! "If you want to travel lots when you retire, start investing in your 401K and Davey stock! I'm gung-ho about being an employee-owner. I felt like I was doing something for the company, and I really like that only Davey employees can buy into it." I felt like I was doing something for the company, and I really like that only Davey employees can buy into it," Grellner said. Another piece of advice Grellner underscores is to appreciate Davey. "I wouldn't want to work anywhere else – even if I had the choice! The clients and all the great people you meet are absolutely the best part about Davey," she said. Reminiscing about her Davey days, it's clear Grellner had heaps of fun while still getting her job done. "That's what it's all about!" Grellner said. you right, too," Grellner said. Even in her retirement, she still gets phone calls from clients checking in. Grellner is – and always has been – a people person. "I haven't changed a bit," Grellner said. Now, she spends her days enjoying her retirement gift from Davey, a patio set. Grellner often has neighbors, friends and family stop by, gather round her table and chit-chat. "We sit out there until the mosquitoes drive us away," Grellner said. When she's not catching up with friends at home, Grellner loves going out with her grandchildren, heading to ball games or taking trips.
