INDISPENSIBLE IRRIGATION INFORMATION WHY WATERING MATTERS, HOW TO DO IT RIGHT From Colorado to the Mid-Atlantic to the Ohio Valley, the amount and frequency of rainfall is as varied as the topography. "Because climate conditions differ widely by region and even by state, so do plant watering needs," says ISA certified arborist Shawn Fitzgerald. Translation: The amount of landscape watering required for your property depends on where you're located and what kind of weather you have. That's why a proactive irrigation plan created for your property's plant needs is so important. First, though, Fitzgerald offers some universal, coast-to- coast irrigation advice: DO water plant material when and where needed. The idea behind supplemental watering is to maintain sufficient soil moisture for optimal plant growth and appearance. DO use watering as a means of periodically recharging tree, shrub and plant root zones. Plants lose significant moisture through transpiration and evaporation, among other things, so replenishment is essential to their health. DO watch for signs of over- or under-watering, such as dropping leaves, or yellowing, scorching or browning foliage. DON'T forget that different areas of the same landscape may have different watering needs. For example, annuals may need watering twice a week; turf once a week; trees and shrubs less frequently. Ask your Davey representative to recommend a watering schedule for your commercial landscape. DON'T forget consistent watering —especially for newly installed or transplanted plant material. Regular watering helps establish stronger root systems and longer plant life. DON'T forget to ask your local Davey representative about water management devices, such as slow-release watering bags, as well as a custom water management plan that's right for you. DON'T DO
