CANOPY ABOVE THE VISION 20/20 AND EMPLOYEE STRENGTH: RECRUIT, DEVELOP, TRAIN AND RETAIN Strengthening our workforce–specifically recruiting, onboarding and retention efforts, increasing career-development opportunities and improving training and education programs–is central in our Employee Strength strategic plan efforts. Employee Engagement Last year, many of you participated in our employee engagement survey. The results showed, as a company, we made overall improvements in all key categories measured–culture, clarity on organizational priorities, career development and opportunities, communication/feedback from managers, and trust in leadership– when compared to results from the baseline survey in 2014. However, many of you offered suggestions for improvements. In response, we are making efforts to improve internal communication channels, expand employee recognition programs and offer more training opportunities within Davey. Development & Training Our Davey Employee Development (Ed) initiative focuses on finding and developing talent and preparing next-generation leaders at all levels and locations. "The Ed initiative is not just a software implementation," says Executive Vice President, U.S. Utility Operations, Steve Marshall, who oversees the Employee Strength strategy. "It is a cultural change enabling us to identify, train and retain our workforce by helping employees define their career paths by focusing on the skills, abilities and experiences needed to succeed." In addition, our Learning Management System (LMS) gives employees access to Davey's education and development programs, and additional online training. "We plan to integrate the LMS with employee development efforts to include a personalized profile which will enable employees to learn at their own pace," says Greg Ina, vice president and general manager of research, recruiting and human resource development. Our employees are one of our greatest strengths. As such, the Davey culture provides continuous opportunities for growth and professional development. Learn more about opportunities for growth in the sidebar at right. Here are a few ways to take advantage of Davey's educational tools and programs. • Through our Learning Management System (LMS) you can earn ISA recertification credits and pesticide certification credits, and take free classes in sales, communication and leadership. (Visit Davey.ttnLearning.com) • Required safety training is recorded directly to your employee profile when it is completed via the LMS. • You can take free E-Learning courses about Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and other Microsoft Office products (contact IT Service Desk, ext. 8555, for details). • Employees can earn an associ- ate's degree through Kent State University's online environmental management program, which also offers scholarships through The Davey Foundation. Addition- ally, Davey training can be applied toward the degree (See Sept/ Oct 2015 MyDavey Bulletin issue for details or call R.J. Laverne at 800-447-1667, ext. 8289, with questions and/or to apply). HOW TO GROW YOUR KNOWLEDGE 24 | May/June 2016 Davey's Strategic Plan ensures the company grows the industry's best employees through strong recruiting, training and development efforts.
