May/June 2016 | 19 species evaluations, plant and animal surveys, wetland and stream creation and enhancement, invasive species management and reforestation. The team at Bryce Road has varying expertise, so when one team member has a question it's now easier than ever to get together and find answers, says Judith Mitchell, senior project manager for Davey Resource Group. Many projects come in the door as a basic wetlands consultation and then evolve to become an environmental permitting project where wetland and stream mitigation can come into play. Such multi-faceted projects require the expertise of a broad team; hence the need for communication and coordination all along the way. "We collaborate a lot," Mitchell says. "It's a function of how we work." Dave Goerig, a senior project manager for Davey Resource Group, says there are other benefits to the Bryce Road space. The ecological services team spends a lot of time in the field. Now, their muddy boots and clothing and other field gear can be kept downstairs in the building's former garage space. Before, getting a Davey fleet vehicle required walking a block to the downtown parking garage. Now the team's fleet vehicles are parked right outside the building. "There was a lot of time spent just trying to coordinate logistics to get out to sites and get back to the office," Goerig says. Karen Wise, division manager of Midwest Natural Resource Consulting for Davey Resource Group, said they also may turn some of the property's outside space into working demonstration areas with native shrubs and wildflower beds. "The north side of the building provides an opportunity for us to practice our invasive plant removal skills, as it was covered with honeysuckle, weedy trees and garlic mustard," Wise says. "So they will practice good stewardship right outside their window." Turn to page 34 to learn the history of Davey's Bryce Road facility. Workers carry new office furniture in through the renovated lobby. The 63-year-old building has all the amenities of a new structure. A former classroom has been converted into shared office space. The glazed green block is original to the 1953 construction.
