The season for spring pests is upon us. While some insects do a landscape good,
others don't. Take borers, for example. They're sneaky in their quest to decimate your
trees and plants.
Here are some tips to help protect your trees and shrubs:
• DON'T FORGET TO LOOK FOR
TELLTALE SIGNS OF INFESTATION:
sawdust-looking deposits, small holes
or cracks in the bark, discolored leaves,
a thinning leaf canopy, and/or seeping
pitch or resin.
• DON'T NEGLECT ROUTINE
PLANT HEALTH CARE, including
deep-root fertilization.
• DO BE AWARE, that borers feed inside
tree trunks and branches, as well as
plant twigs, which means they may not
be visible to the naked eye. Just because
you can't see them doesn't mean they're
not present.
• DO TAKE A BORER INFESTATION
SERIOUSLY, since their feeding habits
can overtake your plants and trees by
inhibiting the flow of much-needed water
and nutrients.
Ask your professionally trained arborist about a borer-specific management
program to treat and protect both trees and shrubs.
