The season for spring pests is upon us. While some insects do a landscape good,
others don't. Take scales, for example. They're insidious in their quest to decimate
your trees and plants.
Here's some tips to help protect your trees and shrubs:
• DON'T FORGET TO LOOK FOR
TELLTALE SIGNS OF INFESTATION:
undersized leaves, yellow-mottled foliage,
premature leaf dropping, a shiny or sticky
residue on affected leaves, a thinning leaf
canopy, and/or black layer on leaves, bark
or sidewalks.
• DON'T NEGLECT ROUTINE PLANT
HEALTH CARE, including proper irrigation
and pruning.
• DO BE AWARE THAT SCALES OFTEN
HIDE IN PLAIN SIGHT. These small
feeders, which anchor themselves onto
plants and trees, are easily camouflaged by
tree bark and plant leaf tissue.
• DO TAKE A SCALE INSECT INVASION
SERIOUSLY, since their voracious feeding
habits can weaken, damage and even kill
your plants.
Ask your professionally trained arborist about a scale-specific
management program to treat and protect both trees and shrubs.
