WHY?
Several reasons. First, because swapping
out nozzles is a very easy process. Second,
in keeping with best management practices,
minimizing or reducing runoff equates to
savings, and updating nozzles helps to do
just that. Third and finally, because even
though run-time on rotator nozzles is longer,
volume output is lower, which minimizes
water waste.
THE RESULT?
Within the first year of changing over the
nozzles there was close to a 20% reduction.
While current-year data is currently
unavailable, Davey continues to monitor the
project, and fully expects that the client will
reap its full target savings goal.
HOW IT WORKS: Stream application
DROPLET TYPE: Large
VOLUME: Low, targeted distribution allows
soil to take in water with minimal watershed
BENEFITS: Less drift, little waste, bigger
savings. Can withstand higher wind
conditions and still reach its target. Works
at a lower pressure, allowing more zones/
clocks to run simultaneously so that more
water gets put down even in short water-
restriction windows.
DRAWBACKS: Material costs are higher
than standard spray nozzles.
HOW IT WORKS: Pops up or is on some
type of riser
DROPLET TYPE: Fine mist
VOLUME: Very high, faster than what soil
can take in
BENEFITS: Most affordable hardware
option
DRAWBACKS: Drift, waste and $$$. Even
in low-wind situations, a fair amount of
water is lost to non-targeted areas, such as
concrete.
