In 1963, a best-selling
chocolate bar cost a nickel,
The Birds was a hit at the box
office, and The Davey Tree
Expert Company opened its
wholesale/retail nursery in
Wooster, Ohio.
Since then, the operation
has grown into a 325-acre
shade and ornamental nursery
featuring high-quality,
premium, large-caliper trees.
"A lot of growers only work with
small container trees," says
Branch Manager Rick Hanshaw.
"It's uncommon to do what we
do, which is specialize in two-
inch, all the way up to nine-inch,
caliper trees."
For many commercial
customers, it's those mature,

THE DAVEY NURSERY HAS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE.
1
SURVIVAL STORY …
Trees are professionally grown,
watered, pruned and harvested at the
Nursery, which helps improve overall
health and survivability.
2
WATER WAYS …
The Nursery uses a drip-irrigation
system on new trees all the way up
until trees mature to about three years
old. "This kind of irrigation waters the
tree, of course," explains Hanshaw,
"but it also forces the root system to
stay within the tree row itself so we can
capture more root system and ensure
better survivability."
3
DIG THIS …
Davey trees are dug up only
when it's healthiest for them, which is
in the spring and fall.
4
ON HARVESTING …
"All of our trees are balled and
burlapped," says Hanshaw, "which
means they're dug up in spring or fall.
When digging, we keep a ball of soil
around tree roots, and then wrap and
tie the tree in burlap to help decrease
transplant shock and keep it intact."

ABOUT DELIVERY …
Davey trees end up on Davey
customer properties, of course, but
also in the hands of builders, munici-
palities, landscape architects and other
