12 | September/October 2015 H ow big is your cape? Davey Canada's Victoria crew showed off its heroic skills when it joined HeroWork's "Radical Renovation." HeroWork's mission is to inspire community members and businesses to come together to renovate charitable foundations. The movement is thriving across Canada, with the support of 150 companies and more than 1,000 volunteers. So far, the organization has completed four projects, valued at 1 million dollars. "Last year I saw HeroWork complete a Corey St. Luke works hard from the aerial truck to remove vines. Davey Delivers a Radical Renovation project at a homeless youth shelter and knew it was a special organization," says Mark Logtenberg, district manager of the Victoria office. Davey's commitment became reality when HeroWork chose the Citizens' Counselling Centre in Great Victoria as its next project. The Centre provides volunteer counseling services for adult community members seeking social and psychologically satisfying lives. Logtenberg, along with Groundman Michael Bujold and Foreman Corey St. Luke, joined the "Radical Renovation." They removed all over- grown vines covering the Citizens' Counselling Centre's building and Cafe Fantastico. They used a bucket truck to trim and prune hawthorn trees surrounding the buildings to prepare for painting crews. "It's such a remarkable time working with HeroWork," Logtenberg says. "It's a really great group of people; a lot of big hearts." The Citizens' Counselling Centre's Radical Renovation is now complete. "We are now HeroWork's go-to people when it comes to tree and aerial work," Logtenberg says. Background: The First Battalion 24th Marines Regiment Memorial design outline for the "Fallen 22." In Honor of the Fallen 22 "If you are going to contribute to a cause, this is a great one." Dave Bargerstock, district manager of Davey's Northeast Detroit R/C office, answered a call to help honor fallen marines. From 2006 to 2007, the Selfridge, Michigan- based First Battalion 24th Marines were deployed to Al Anbar Province, Iraq, for duty. During this time of deployment, 22 marines were killed in combat. In honor of the "Fallen 22" and their unwavering commitment to keep- ing the nation safe, the 24 Memorial Committee was developed to create a proper memorial. The first phase of construction began on Sept. 11, 2014, with a groundbreaking memorial ceremony, which raised enough funds to start the project. The next phase began this year when the 24 Memorial Committee contacted Bargerstock to help clear the memorial site. "I was very happy to get the call," he says. Bargerstock quickly agreed to help out and put together a three-man crew, including Landscapers Zach La Combe and Andrew Tomlin and Surgery Foreman Bill Scott. The team took two days to clear the land and get the site ready for construction crews to begin building the memorial. The memorial includes an 85-foot-long wall with names of fallen heroes lost in combat and a 19-foot table with seating for 23 in front of it. The spots at the table represent the Fallen 22 and one plate represents future losses. "Everyone seems pretty happy about the work Davey completed," Bargerstock says.
