September/October 2015 | 11 D avey Resource Group (DRG)'s San Diego, California-based employees spread their tree expertise around town to assist two more Arbor Day events this year. Arbor Day 1: Encinitas, California Encinitas achieved "Tree City USA" designation for the fourth time in a row, thanks to its annual Arbor Day celebration. Community members, city officials and tree companies united to take part in this TREEmendous day, planting 28 trees throughout four of the city's parks. Ryan Feura, senior consulting utility forester for DRG, led volunteer groups to the various parks around town. Feura, along with Senior Consulting Utility Foresters Tony Greene and Nila Felise, brought his children to join the fun. More than 35 volunteers of all ages helped plant a variety of tree species, including California sycamores, white elders, western red bud, coast live oaks, crape myrtles, Japanese blueberry and Canary Island pines. "Days like this show what kind of community we are," Feura says. "We are not only in the city working to get a paycheck, but we also show we care about trees and their benefits." Arbor Day 2: Adobe Bluffs Elementary School, Rancho Penasquitos, California San Diego Gas and Electric (SDG&E) selects one recipient for an Arbor Day celebra- tion each year. This year's lucky winners were third graders from the Adobe Bluffs Arbor Day Fun Continues Ravenna, Ohio's Shade Tree Commission is committed to its annual Arbor Day events—spreading tree love to a different local school each year. This year, Willyard El- ementary School's fifth grade students joined the commission on a day full of tree-related fun. Karen Wise, manager of natural resource consulting, Davey Resource Group (DRG) Tree Class in Session Idea submitted by: Karen Wise, manager, natural resource consulting, DRG and member of the tree commission, assisted students in planting two imperial locust trees on school grounds. The children enjoyed learning about tree benefits and adding two new beautiful trees to their school. Thanks to these young arborists, Ravenna retains its "Tree City USA" designation for the third consecutive year—an effort to which DRG Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Specialist Holly Richards has also contributed. She has provided valuable GIS map support to support the city's effort to manage its urban forest. Many special guests participated in the Arbor Day celebration, including Mayor Kevin Faulconer, Congressman Scott Peters and Poway Unified Superintendent Dr. John Collins—but the most important guest was Smokey the Bear. The kids were thrilled when Smokey the Bear arrived on Cal Fire's truck to greet them and teach them about fire safety—especially pertaining to the current drought. Together, the children and Davey volunteers planted more than 20 new trees at the school. Davey's volunteers included Ryan Feura, Jose Gonzalez, Tony Greene, Jeff Miles, Travis Nelson, Emmet Peak, Tom Schwend, Morgan Werth and Mike Wloch.
