TREE & TURF TREATMENTS ROOTED IN SCIENCE STOPPING INVASIVE SPECIES STARTS WITH RESEARCHING THEM If someone would let him, Jim Zwack, Director of Technical Services within The Davey Institute, could talk about Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) for days. Not just because he finds the species interesting. (He does.) Not only because EAB has killed 100+ million trees and spread across 17 states and Canada. (It has.) And not merely because EAB impacts tree biomechanics in a way that makes affected trees extremely dangerous. (It can.) But mostly because Jim knows from scientific research at The Davey Institute that individual ash trees can be protected with a very high rate of success. And that, says Jim, is what makes The Davey Institute's work in invasive species so profound. "Given the right circumstances," he says, "any invasive species—not just EAB—can repopulate and outcompete native material, making invasive species of all kinds very, very difficult to control." Using plant science research, the teams at The Davey Institute evaluate everything from invasive species behavior to tree biomechanics to product chemistries, just to obtain scientifically meaningful results to the benefit of trees and turf. Here, Jim shares three types and examples of invasive species often found in commercial landscapes. The Davey Institute houses a diagnostic lab with R&D scientists and experts in any particular aspect of horticulture. Regional technical advisors train our technicians and serve as resources to address the specific needs of our clients. The Institute helps multi- national product companies evaluate their chemistries for uses and applications in the green industry. The Institute engages in survey work to evaluate and document Davey Tree sustainability processes for the company's corporate social responsibility efforts. DITS (Davey Institute of Trees Sciences) is a 100-year-old landmark training pro- gram for future Davey leaders that involves an entire month of rigorous coursework and technical skills training.
