When the Cleveland Clinic built its Twinsburg,
Ohio facility on property surrounded by a
wetlands conservation easement, further
development was absolutely out of the
question—until the Clinic teamed up with
Davey to prove that preservation and
progress are not mutually exclusive.
PATHWAY
OF
POSSIBILTY
Natural boardwalks. Park-like views.
Stone outcroppings. White oak bridges.
Teakwood benches. As if the stunning
array of features wasn't enough, the
1.4-mile Razinger Family Community
Trail at the Cleveland Clinic Twinsburg
Family Health and Surgery Center is
something of a modern miracle—at
least when it comes to EPA restrictions
regarding wetlands protection.
"The area was under easement," says
wetlands expert and Davey Resource
Group (DRG) Project Manager Corine
Peugh. "Because it was protected from
development, the Clinic had to get
special permission just to do this trail."
And so began the process to find
a partner who could implement a
vision within EPA
compensatory
mitigation rules.
"Because of the
environmental
impact, the Clinic
couldn't pick just anyone," says Davey
Regional Business Development
Manager Frank Monteleone. "We
proved we could overcome project
complexities and still keep the
Clinic compliant, thanks to our
extensive resources."
Davey won the work in late 2014, but
a cold, wet winter delayed project kick
off until spring 2015.
"There was a lot of physical labor
involved and a much tighter timeline,"
says Davey Account Manager Jeff
Blind. "The area was so natural we
literally had to start with the first
opening we could find."
Throughout the project, all work was
carefully curated by DRG. The ability
to leverage internal resources from
multiple divisions made Davey an
especially capable partner.
"Other firms would have had to call
in DRG anyway," says Monteleone.
"Because DRG is Davey, we were able
to provide continual oversight so that
the Clinic was in complete compliance
with everything required by the EPA."
In fact, several potential partners
withdrew from early consideration
because they couldn't do what
Davey could, including clearing and
removing limbs to building bridges
and setting stone outcroppings—all
without heavy machinery.
"Our ability to offer so many
services is truly distinct"
