Giving Trees On Earth Day, S&S Tree visited Pine Hill Elementary School to share just how special trees can be—and with them a surprise guest arrived. Wearing the Woodsy the Owl costume S&S Tree rented from the USDA Forest Service, Andrea Ebeling, client experi- ence coordinator, greeted nearly 400 students in attendance. She joined Gail Nozal, assistant district manager, as Nozal presented tree facts and other information in the gymnasium. "The kids were so excited, that was the best part," Ebeling says. S&S Tree sponsored the event to support Earth Day. O akland County, Michigan, witnessed the beginning of its new memorial site 13 years ago; it's Michigan's only memorial that honors both police and firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty. The Michigan Fallen Heroes Memorial (MFHM), located in Pontiac, has continued to evolve ever since—adding a granite wall upon which names of Michigan's fallen heroes are etched and more—but surrounding trees had yet to receive attention. In early spring, Davey's North Detroit R/C office received a request from Diane Andrews-Banks, the executive director of the Michigan Green Industry Association (MGIA) and organizer of the second annual MGIA Day of Service event. She asked District Manager Josh Leo for some assistance with tree mainte- nance at the MFHM, the location of this year's MGIA Day of Service. Leo coordinated the volunteer Earth Day event with his two-man crew, including Trimmers Liam Docherty and Ryan Ferguson, who trimmed trees around the monument. Kathy Hendricksen, manager of business development and client services, and Ryan Sherman, sales arborist at Davey's Northeast Chicago R/C office, distributed 50 total seedlings to Earth Day Fair attendees, which included hundreds of kindergarten through fifth grade students and their families. "I chose the sugar maple and white fir species knowing they're low maintenance trees for children, but I'm also just a big fan of sugar maples," Sherman says, adding the seedlings came from a nursery in Wisconsin. Sherman, who has been involved with the event for two years, also distributed proper tree planting information to new seedling owners with Hendricksen, whose daughter attended the school. "It was nice to hear some of the kids talk about the seedlings they received at past events and watching them grow," Hendricksen says. "The kids were so enthusiastic about the event." "This was a unique event," Leo says. "Doing service in the community and having our trucks at the memorial site was rewarding." Leo and his crew look forward to working with Andrews-Banks again in the future. "Mandy Andrews, executive director of the site, was extremely pleased with all of the work that was completed and even stated the garden looked better than it did when it was first installed," Andrews-Banks says, adding, "special thanks to all of you for taking time out of your busy schedules to work with us."
