July/August 2015 | 3 Planting Ahead W hat does Arbor Day mean to you? Do you reminisce about the sapling—now a strong, sturdy oak tree—you received in your elementary school classroom, before you were old enough to realize just how beneficial trees can be? Is it a reminder for all the backyard tree and landscape maintenance you have yet to do that season? Or, is Arbor Day a national holiday during which you spend tending trees in your community? This year, we heard from more than 15 crews that participated in Arbor Day projects and community events—plus another handful of crews involved with Earth Day activities this spring; not to mention any others from whom we have yet to hear! It's rewarding to share such positive dialogue with crewmembers involved with springtime community events—sometimes more than one—and realize the differences they're making to benefit trees and tree lovers. That's why we enjoy sharing them in The MyDavey Bulletin and on the Davey blog, "In the Shade" (blog.davey.com) as well. These stories are so special we decided to dedicate a majority of this issue to Davey's Arbor Day and Earth Day efforts from 2015. Flip to page 12 for an exciting recap of South Houston R/C's accomplishments during a "Friendly Tree Planting Competition," or skip to page 7 to learn how Davey's Wilmington R/C office and Kerns Brothers Tree Service & Landscaping, a Davey company, collaborated to support one large, combined Arbor Day and Earth Davey event. Sean Zieche, production manager at The Care of Trees Glen Ellyn office, will never forget one particular comment he received from a child who participated in a tree climb- ing activity at a community event: "A kid came up to me and said, 'I just want to thank you for supporting me in the tree; I didn't think I would make it to the top,'" Zieche says. "It made my day." (Go to page 21 for the story.) We enjoy hearing about your experiences and discovering what you love about your job, community involvement and advocating for trees. Don't hesitate to tell us more! Send your story ideas to bulletin@davey. com. Happy planting!
