THE TRUTH ABOUT ANNUALS
Flowering, non-woody plants that germinate, flower, set
seed, and die within a growing season are called annuals.
Here we debunk some common myths about these lively
landscape blooms.
ANNUALS ARE A
BUDGET BUSTER.
Annuals are the fastest way
to amp up the landscape with a pop
of eye-catching color. The key to
making them a smarter investment?
Placement. Judiciously planted
annuals have the most impact in high-
visibility areas like entryways. Studies
show that well-appointed landscapes
attract more shoppers and diners,
too. So even though annual color
does require allocation in the budget,
it's a revenue-generator, too.
ANNUALS ARE TOO
SHORT-LIVED.
While it is true that annuals
inevitably die when exposed to
seasonal changes in weather, the
impact they make during their 3-4
months in bloom is undeniable. In
our region, three rotations per year
are ideal.
THERE'S NEVER A
GOOD TIME OR PLACE
TO PLANT THEM.
Our region is envied by the rest of the
country due to our year-long growing
season. Annual color plants may be
installed/replaced year-round.As for
where to plant, Shawn Fitzgerald,
a landscape horticulturist with
The Davey Institute, says the best
displays are seen at 55 mph. That
means big blocks of bold color, along
with raised planters at high visibility
exit and entry points.
ANNUALS REQUIRE
TOO MUCH
MAINTENANCE.
Davey can customize a maintenance
plan for almost any budget. Some
annuals require deadheading; others
require daily or weekly watering.
The key is choosing the right type of
annual for your location.
ANNUALS DON'T
'DO' ANYTHING.
Now that's a myth if we
ever heard one! Besides helping fill
in bare spots for a lush, mature look,
annuals add texture, variety and
color to make your property more
memorable to customers, tenants
and visitors.
