Branching Out to Bigger Opportunities W ith a history like Davey's—and the company's tendency to continue growing—there's no surprise Davey has experienced several milestones in recent years. Last year marked Davey's 35th year as an employee-owned company. And this year, we celebrate our 135th anniversary since John Davey rooted the company in Kent, Ohio. This April, the Kent Historical Society will open "Davey and Kent: Growing Together Since 1880," a collection of Davey artifacts and memorabilia dating from the very beginning of the company. Visitors will learn more about Davey's capabilities and discover how the company has grown into the business it is today. As Davey employees, we're proud of our roots. We're proud not only for the company's accomplishments from year-to- year, but also many employees are proud of the accomplishments they continue to achieve as individuals after deciding to root their careers in Davey. The careers of most Davey managers, for example, didn't begin in an office or cubicle. Many actually started working in the field. "I worked from the top down," says Larry Abernathy, vice president and general manager of the Davey Surgery Company. "I started in the trees." Advancement from entry-level positions to upper management requires commitment, hard work and a desire for self-improvement. And taking advantage of the education and training programs Davey offers employees is important, too. "Education is absolutely critical," says Ward Peterson, manager of utility and urban resources, Davey Resource Group, who joined Davey as a tree climber in the mid- 1970s. "Davey's history of its emphasis on education demonstrated the company's success through it." As Davey operations all over the U.S. and Canada gear up for the growing season and subsequent services, I encourage each employee to discover new ways to grow themselves within their careers. Get inspired to try a new strategy or learn a new skill. Grow your relationships with clients. And notice the positive changes that occur within your daily routine.
