The Best Foot Forward
B
eginnings hold the promise of new lessons to be
learned, new territory to be explored and old
lessons to be recalled, practiced and appreciated."
– Melody Beattie
'Tis the time for setting goals, choosing
resolutions and starting fresh for the New
Year. It's so easy to dream about the results
we'll experience when we exercise regularly,
eat better or save more money. And it's so
easy to forget the reasons why we want such
things and let go of all motivation, endurance
and willpower to keep moving forward
toward reaching new goals.
But imagine the potential for positive
changes, growth and opportunity when you
take time to reflect on past experiences before
fast-forwarding to future outcomes with
processes that have merely just begun.
January, however, is not the only beginning
in which you have to acknowledge the past.
In fact, you may take time to reflect at the
beginning of each day. And sometimes, you
must determine the object, idea or belief
that keeps you going, and remember to bring
attention to it on a regular basis.
For example, Rick Hanshaw, employee
owner and manager of the Davey Nursery in
Wooster, Ohio, says being an employee owner
helps him put his best foot forward every day.
"Employee ownership helps me better engage
myself with the job, other employees and the
equipment I use," he explains.
So, what drives you? Now that we've
completed yet another year, take time to
simply reflect on what has happened as you
look ahead to coming months. How can that
help you accomplish the objectives you've
set for the coming year? Before you jump in
to what could be, remember to apply that
prior knowledge and step only your best
foot forward.
What have you experienced during
your Davey career? With which loyal
clients have you worked? Where have you
visited for a project, an inspection or a cool
tree? And what keeps you coming back to
experience those interesting moments
every day?
Tell us at bulletin@davey.com. You've been
willing to share stories about your Davey
experiences for so many years—135, in fact—
but we're always willing to listen for more.
