T
wo production managers from Davey's
Cleveland West CLS branch took the
initiative to enhance their field knowledge
and resulting client experiences—all on their
own time.
Through the Accredited Snow Contractors
Association (ASCA), Matthew Bova and
Eddie Hill have earned ASCA Certified
designation. The 10-hour certification program,
which involves enrollment in an online
class available at www.asca-consultants.org,
requires participants to complete lessons and
corresponding tests at home.
"The knowledge we've learned is the best
part of the program," Bova says. "We now
understand how to better serve customers in
certain situations—information we've passed
on to our crews to teach them and further
benefit our team. We also got to see the
clients' perspectives on things."
According to Hill, the program did not
only help him better understand the ramifica-
tions of damage involved with snow plowing,
for example, but it was also straight-forward

to Davey Services
and easy to follow.
Branch Manager Vito Monteleone and
Assistant Branch Manager Pasquale
Monteleone, Jr., have earned ASCA certifica-
tion in previous years. Both Bova and Hill
agree they will most likely complete the
requirements to become recertified next year
as well. Bova recognizes the value in the pro-
gram: "It's a good thing to become recertified
because it provides you with more knowledge
you can bring to your job as a way to better
serve clients."
Visitors From the Land Down Under
On Oct. 21, 2013, representatives from Skyline Landscape Services visited Davey's corporate offices
in Kent, Ohio, for office tours. Skyline Landscape, a large landscape firm from Australia, had arranged
the trip through Colin Richardson, who met Dan Joy at a roundtable discussion during PLANET's
Green Industry Conference (GIC) several years ago. Skyline Landscape's representatives attended GIC
in Louisville, Ky., after their visit with Davey in October. (Pictured from left to right: Dan Joy, Davey
vice president and general manager, Commercial Landscape Services (CLS); Chris Richardson, Skyline
Landscape co-director; Mark Svozil, Davey vice president of operations, CLS; Michael Culley, Skyline
Landscape operations manager; Colin Richardson, Skyline Landscape co-director; and Mathew
Kenney, Skyline Landscape account manager).
