21 September/October 2024 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN SAFETY WOODY DEBRIS CLEARED AT GREENUP HYDROELECTRIC PLANT Eastern Utility employees removed post-storm fl ooding debris from the deck of the City of Hamilton's Greenup Hydroelectric Plant located on the Ohio River in Franklin Furnace, Ohio at the Greenup Locks and Dam. The plant's deck was clogged with an 18-foot-high pile of driftwood and other materials. A preplan to safely clear the debris was developed by Terry Malone, supervisor, central region, Eastern Utility services, Paul Will, general foreman, City of Hamilton account, Bryan Sheppard, general foreman, Butler Rural Electric account, and Roy Montan, senior regional safety specialist, health and safety department. Over three weeks, Will and Sheppard supervised six Eastern Utility employees who cleared the pile of driftwood. The safety plan included employees wearing personal fl oatation devices due to the proximity of the river to the worksite. The U.S. Coast Guard was on alert with a rescue boat downstream. The on-site supervisor acted as a spotter in case anyone fell into the water. "Everyone was amazed at how safely we were operating. I want to give Roy a huge shout out for his help," Malone said. "The City of Hamilton was pleased, and Greenup said if they needed any work in the future, they'll call Davey." Eastern Utility services employees on the Butler Rural Electric account who worked to remove the debris last spring were Alexey Acea Guerra, trimmer, and Misael Fernandez Fernandez, foreman, along with Ridel Estopinales Sosa, trimmer who was on the account at the time. Employees who are now on the City of Hamilton account but were on the Butler Rural Electric account at the time included Michel Fernandez Fernandez, foreman, and Jorge Maelky Sosa Vicente, groundperson. A 200-foot-long by 150-foot-wide pile of driftwood covers Greenup Hydroelectric Plant's deck. Chainsaws, shovels and rakes were used to clear the debris. A 100-foot-tall sycamore tree, around 40 inches in diameter at breast height, was uncovered in the pile. Paul Herb, sales arborist, North Baltimore offi ce, is pictured talking to forestry technology students at Allegany College of Maryland. Davey Business Development Team business developers John Jastrzembski and Lou Meyer, along with Residential/ Commercial services North Baltimore offi ce employees Paul Herb, sales arborist, and Adam Lockhart, trimmer, visited Allegany College of Maryland in Cumberland, Maryland to demonstrate tree care practices to forestry technology students. They covered root crown excavation, vertical mulching, and nutrient management. A group of high school students who were on a college tour observed the demonstrations as well. The relationship between Davey and Allegany College of Maryland has spanned well over a decade and remains strong, especially for Herb, who is also an adjunct STUDENTS OBSERVE TREE CARE PRACTICE DEMONSTRATIONS professor with a climbing class at the college. "The best part of doing this is working with the students and seeing them become interested in the outdoors," Herb said. "It's great when they understand there are careers other than traditional forestry." EXPERTISE
