THE DAVEY BULLETIN
Davey partnered with the Greater Cleveland Sports
Commission (GCSC) as a corporate sponsor to donate and
plant trees in honor of the Pan-American Masters Games
that were hosted in Cleveland, Ohio in July.
Environmental Consulting services (EC), Davey Resource
Group (DRG) employees Jacob Johnson, environmental
technician, Lizzie Sords, associate consultant, and Jim
Vandertill, environmental scientist, joined volunteers from
the GCSC in planting 24 trees at the Cleveland Cultural
Gardens to represent the 24 medal-contending sports.
"I feel like the Cultural Gardens are one of Cleveland's
landmark parks," Sords said. "The fact that we got to plant
trees in a place that's more than 100 years old and has a lot
of history was awesome."
A variety of native trees were planted, including serviceberry,
redbud, dogwood, American hornbeam, and fringe.
"It's cool that Davey is taking a big role in helping to create
TREE PLANTING, ORIENTEERING AT PAN-AMERICAN GAMES
a permanent commemoration of the games by planting
trees," Sords said.
One of the many sports held at the Pan-American
Masters Games was orienteering, an outdoor sport with
an emphasis on map-reading and navigational skills to make
it through unfamiliar terrain quickly.
Sandra Albro, senior associate consultant, EC, DRG,
participated in the orienteering – sprint distance event held
at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio and the orienteering –
long distance event held in Peninsula, Ohio at Kendall Lake
in Cuyahoga Valley National Park. She won silver in both
events for her age group.
"After years of competing locally in orienteering, I enjoyed
the opportunity to take a stab at international competition,"
Albro said. "It has renewed my excitement to study and
train for next spring's national competition, the Orienteering
Cincinnati Flying Pig XXVII."
