16 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | July/August 2024 Six Factors and Forces training sessions took place over the course of three months this spring with approximately 108 employees from Davey Resource Group, Eastern Utility services, and Residential/Commercial services in attendance. "Factors and Forces is an excellent example of the processes that we may do automatically but don't realize it," Jimmie Frazier, PHC technician, Southwest Milwaukee office, said. "It's important to be reminded of these practices so that everyone can be safe." The training focused on how tree biology can affect the structural integrity of the tree. The "five factors" and the "five forces" are used to examine the health and integrity of a tree to determine if it's safe to climb and work on. "There's endless knowledge when it comes to arboricul- ture," Isabella Lemus, UVM technician, Utility Vegetation Management services, Davey Resource Group, said. "I think this training reinforced how much I already knew while also FACTORS AND FORCES TRAINING REINFORCES SAFE PRACTICES teaching me new things. It helped me gauge where I was as an arborist, and it's exciting knowing that there's always more room to grow." LEADERSHIP Chelsi Abbott, technical advisor, Davey Institute, is showing the group samples of wood decay fungi. Sixteen Residential/Commercial (R/C) services employees participated in an arborist skills climbing session held over three days at Camp Mattatuck in Plymouth, Connecticut. Another arborist skills climbing session took place over three days in Lyons, Colorado, with 12 R/C services employees in attendance. The topics for both sessions included working a positioning skyline system ARBORIST SKILLS CLIMBING IN CONNECTICUT AND COLORADO and a stationary rope system, arborist climbing knot tying, equipment inspection, rope construction and care, the evolution of climbing systems, and more. "When I look at these trainings, what really sticks out to me is the sense of community," Jessica Orozco, trimmer, North Denver office, said. "It's nice to know that there are other people at the company like me, and I can learn from them."
