31 May/June 2024 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN EXECUTIVE VP ENJOYS RETIREMENT AFTER LIFE OF TRAVEL Steve Marshall started his journey with Davey in 1977 as an S&S technician at the Akron office after graduating from Kent State University with a bachelor's degree in art with a focus on glassblowing. Marshall knew he needed a stable job to take care of his wife, Jan, and their children. Marshall was able to secure an interview with the now retired Roger Funk, vice president, chief technical officer, thus launching his 40-year career at the company, retiring in 2017. "I grew up on golf courses and started working in the green industry for my dad when I was a teenager. He was a general manager of various country clubs," Marshall said. "That's probably why I adapted to Davey so quickly. I understood agronomy and horticultural issues." Davey was rapidly expanding and provided many oppor- tunities for Marshall. After promotions to various roles in Residential/Commercial and Eastern Utility services, then he was named executive vice president, operations, in 2007. "There are multitudes of opportunities available. No one should be afraid to join in and offer their expertise, as each one of us has our own," Marshall said. "If you're willing to contribute, you will get recognized." Marshall has lived in a variety of places, including Panama, Cuba, and Governors Island, New York, through the age of nine, as his father was in the United States Army. After that, his family moved to Pennsylvania because his father had taken a job running the William Penn Hotel, now known as the Omni, in downtown Pittsburgh. Once Marshall began his career at Davey, he traveled to many more locations. "It was a really fulfilling experience. You must adapt quickly Retirees! One of the most memorable projects Marshall worked on was in Seattle, Washington, after the Inaugural Day windstorm hit the Puget Sound area on January 20, 1993. Employees were brought in from all over Southern California and Canada to assist with storm recovery work. "The damage was so extensive that it took two months to help with the cleanup there," Marshall said. "That really solidified our presence in the Seattle area." Marshall also worked on a major tree removal project in 1990 at The Olympic Club golf course in San Francisco, California, to remove Eucalyptus trees, which had grown quickly, and had become unwieldly and were causing damage. The lumber was sent to Japan to be recycled into computer paper. In retirement, Marshall enjoys boating, fishing, and golfing. He owns his own fishing pontoon boat, which he takes out often. He also travels to different beaches around Sarasota, Florida, and Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, where he relaxes and spends time with family. ADVICE FROM STEVE MARSHALL: 1. Don't question or be afraid of your lack of knowledge when you earn a promotion. Once you fit into a position, you will acquire knowledge rapidly. 2. Enjoy your time with your fellow employees. 3. Invest in the company's future and in your own future by taking advantage by buying Davey's stock.
