In preparation for the International Society of Arboriculture's
Texas Tree Climbing Championship, Stephen F. Austin
State University's Tree Climbing Club held a training session
with Jose Garcia, arborist skills trainer, Davey Institute.
Sue Hoppe, recruiter, human resources department,
works on recruiting events with the university and helped
coordinate the training session.
Garcia made sure that the club knew how to safely use the
equipment Davey recently donated to them through Chuck
Shouse, market manager, Texas operations, Residential/
Commercial services. This equipment included items such

as carabiners, foot ascenders, and a gear bag.
They worked on throwball techniques before practicing
limb-walking, both of which will aid the students who plan to
compete in the Texas Tree Climbing Championship.
"I'm passionate about teaching students when they're excited
about learning. You can tell when they're having a good time,
and that's an awesome feeling as an instructor to be able to
pass tree climbing knowledge to them," Garcia said.

I think part of the reason Davey is so successful
is because you're not showing up to work for
somebody, you're showing up and it's your
company. Each person can have that sense
of ownership where they're invested in the
company, invested in the sales, invested in the
production – in every aspect, because it affects
them directly, and they're allowed to be a part
of it. Employee ownership gives people a sense
of accountability, ownership, and self-motivation.
That really changes the process and how things
go. It motivates us as a company because
everybody is working towards the same goal.
