DIPLOMA RETURNS TO KENT AFTER 109 YEARS Over a century after it was issued to an employee, a diploma from the Davey Institute of Tree Surgery (as it was called then) has returned to Davey. Lester Glenmore "Blondy" Dean received his diploma when he graduated from D.I.T.S. in December 1915. During his time at Davey, Lester Dean worked throughout the U.S. Dean's diploma had served as a family keepsake for over 100 years until his grandson, Dean Varian, reached out to Davey to see if the company would be interested in it for our historical archives, where the diploma is now safely housed today. Dean Varian said his grandfather eventually became the successful owner-operator of Grand River Orchards, the largest orchard in Northeast Ohio and Northwest Pennsylvania in the 1930s through the early 1960s near Geneva, Ohio. Christ Bast, center, senior vice president, treasurer and operations support, receives a copy of a diploma from the 1915 class of the Davey Institute of Tree Surgery from Dean and Ruth Varian, who donated the diploma to Davey for inclusion in the company historical archives. The diploma was Lester Glenmore Dean's (inset image), who is Dean Varian's maternal grandfather. Bast is an acquaintance of the Varian family and arranged the donation. The orchard is no longer in operation. "My siblings and I have a deep well of memories visiting our grandparents at the orchard," Dean Varian said. Three out of every four members of the 1915 class were promoted to foreman after attending D.I.T.S., according to the December 1915 issue of The Davey Bulletin. The year 1915 proved to be "a year of great progress and achievement for the whole Davey organization," according to the Bulletin. "The individual members of the Davey organization, including the splendid class of 1915 have prospered handsomely," the 1915 Bulletin states. "It is a fine thing to make money, but it is a glorious thing to make it in such a noble work as tree surgery." Scan the QR code or visit the "Employee Recognition Shortcut" at the top of the homepage on DaveyConnect to access the form. Have you volunteered recently or have plans to soon? Be sure to log your Green Leaders hours to record your volunteer time.
