20 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | March/April 2024 The Davey Institute's Adam Baker, research entomologist, and Dave Olson, technical advisor, spoke at the "Ecology of Managed Landscapes" symposium at the Entomological Society of America's annual meeting in National Harbor, Maryland. Thomas Whitney, technical advisor, assisted Baker in organizing the symposium. "The symposium featured work from industry scientists, university researchers, and state agencies, with the aim of bringing people together who are doing research which serves the green industry," Baker said. EXPERTISE The Davey Institute recently consulted in several countries around the globe, including South Korea, Algeria, and Saudi Arabia. Scott Maco, director, Ecosystems Services, Davey Institute, said South Korea is one of the latest countries to begin using i-Tree ® , a suite of forestry assessment software tools developed in 2006 by the USDA Forest Service (USFS) with Davey and other partners. i-Tree ® has been used in 172 countries, with 40 of those who have become clients or partners of the Davey Institute to incorporate their country's data into the tool's full functionality. "In Asia, South Korea is one of many nations working to develop an Asian Urban Forest Network and optimize i-Tree ® with their own data," Maco said. The Davey Institute's Dr. A.D. Ali, manager, special projects, and Jim Zwack, vice president and general manager, completed a tree inventory and risk assessment report at the U.S. Ambassador's residence in Algiers, Algeria. DAVEY INSTITUTE CONSULTS IN ASIA, NORTH AFRICA, AND THE MIDDLE EAST "The need for this analysis and sonic tomography work came about after a tree with a lot of decay dropped a limb which was around six-to-seven-inches in diameter, several minutes after the Ambassador walked through the area," Ali said. Work continues at the U.S. Embassy's Chief of Mission residence in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as follow up from a tree inventory conducted by the Davey Institute in late 2021. The current residence is being demolished and reconstructed. This spring, Ali is supervising the moving of trees to be kept in a nursery until the new construction is completed, then the trees will be returned to the finished Embassy site. The Davey Institute recently paired up with the University of Florida, Gainesville, for a one-day "Cutting Edge Research for Tree Care Professionals" conference. The Davey Institute's Ali, along with Dan Herms, vice president of research and development; Adam Baker, research entomologist; Chris Fields-Johnson, tree conservation specialist; and technical advisors Manny Nassar, Sarah Ruark, and Thomas Whitney joined arboriculture professors from the university to share their work, related to management of trees in the urban landscape.
