11 March/April 2024 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN Davey awarded Arbor Grant scholarships to 25 two- and four-year higher education institutions for the 2023-2024 academic year. Students pursuing degrees in arboriculture, environmental science, forestry, horticulture, landscape, natural resources and conservation, turf science, and urban forestry, were chosen to receive funds by a selection committee from the institutions based on academic potential, work ethic, and financial need. "The Arbor Grant program helps support relationships with colleges where we partner, support, engage with, and hire DAVEY AWARDS ARBOR GRANT SCHOLARSHIPS LEADERSHIP Planting the SEED, an Eastern Utility leadership development program, held their latest session over the course of four days in Kent, Ohio, at the Davey Institute, with 14 trainees from Eastern Utility services in attendance. This program was created to support managers by helping them learn how to be courageous leaders, hone the craft of leadership, and build a leadership pipeline for the future. Ramon Velazquez, senior supervisor, Withlacoochee River Electric Cooperative, Inc. account, said that the program encouraged him to grow when he previously felt comfortable where he was. "Now that I've gone to the program, I think differently," Velazquez said. "I texted my manager from the airport, saying I wanted to grow and move up. He replied, 'Ramon, I've been waiting for this moment'." Logan Haylett, general foreman, First Energy account, added that the program lets you see a lot of your up and downsides in a raw form, and nobody's there to judge you.
